What is this noise from my honda accord 2.0i 1996?

Hi

I get a loudish whining motor type sound coming from under bonnet passenger side soon after starting engine and periodically when driving. No other symptoms are apparent. Does anybody have any idea what this may be and whether I need to fix something? Noticed it was doing it after I had bought it (a couple of monhs ago) so do not know if this is normal). Also, does anybody know when cambelt should be changed? car has done 62000. Thanks

I think I would be looking at the power steering pump and or the alternator ,check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir !

Thanks for yous help. Don't think it is the alternator or the gearbox as noise is not constant and does not get louder and only happens occasionally and straight after start up. Sounds like some sort of pump. I wonder if it may be the abs pressurising? it seems like soemthing is doing an action in response to a sensor. think I will need to identify the part causing the noise under the bonnet and get a manual. It may be roundish item under bonnet passenger side close to windscreen.

sorry! i forgot that hondas are back to front!! the gearbox is on the drivers side, if its passenger side, id guess at the bearings in the alternator, but would have the same symptoms...get higher pitched and louder the more you rev up the engine

PAssenger side...without hearing it, id guess at the gearbox being low on oil, that causes a whine when you drive, and gets louder and higher pitched the higher you rev the car, i work for mg rover and before a customer has the car whether it new or used, the car gets checked over, including gearbox oil level...not sure if that goes for where your car was bought???? i believe the belt should have been changed at 60000
