zanusi wdt 1085 trips house rcd?

on start up my zanusi wdt1085 trips the main rcd. its about 6 years old so would it be the motor brushes grounding out?

unlikely, motors have a toc (a type of fuse) which would trip if the brushes had worn out. most likely cause is a heating element that has blown or is well on its way to failing causing an earth fault and tripping an rcd. really you need to test the machine with an insulation tester but i am assuming you dont have one. the way to try and determine what it is , try this:- with the POWER OFF, remove the lid and rear half cabinet. disconnect the motor. keeping CLEAR of the machine plug it back in and try a wash cycle.if your rcd does not trip after a few minutes its your motor. if it does trip, unplug the machine, reconnect the motor and disconnect the heater. plug in and try again. if the machine runs you know its your heater. if you fail to locate the fault after this you really need to call an engineer as you are unlikely to get any further. please please ensure power is off before you remove any panels, or touch anything inside
