my dvd quit reading dvds but still reads cds and data discs. the only way to fix this is to reboot computer to factory default and then it works fine . but when i go to burn a disc (dvd) nit quits working again. then back to factory default to get it going again

Not sure what you mean by factory Default. DVD/CD drives are actually combo drives and need two sets of software to drive them - one set for CD and another for DVD. When your PC is not 'factory default' the DVD software is not installed and that's why the drive doesn't work.
