on tv i saw it advertised for a usb plug in that lets you get freeview.thanks.

Adssuming that you live in an area with a good Freeview signal and your Lapto has a USB port. You need a DVB-T USB adapter (like the one you saw) and a good aerial feed. The portable aerials that come with the USB adapters aren't much cop. You can also get PC Card (PCMCIA) DVB-T adapters too.
