after taking the back off the appliance decided to order a new element, but after reading some other peoples problems, have realized it could be the thermostate. have no idea where to locate this, what am i looking for?

Don't know if this will be useful. I had a similar problem where the thermostat had cut out because the vent was blocked. There was a reset button (though didn't look like anything other than a bit of red plastic) at the back of the machine which I had to press and it worked fine. Check on your manual or get the manual online if you can't locate it.
