how can I fix my zig zag [Brothers Boutique 771] serial #c25187945?

I first tried to use the overlock stitch (overcasting) I followed the instruction in the brothers sewing manual, because it had been a while since I had used this particular stitch. When this mechanism did not work , I tried the simple zig zag stitch. I could not even get it to work .What can I do to fix this problem. I opened the top part of the machine and all the springs appeared to be intack. But something is not catching to allow it to go into this mode. what can I do to fix this problem?

The needle did not move, but I changed the needle anyway, it was slightly bent. I put it in correctly. The machine has been oiled. The zig zag still did not work. When I open the top I notice there is a plate on the right hand side ,when I move the tool bar ,it looks like it suppose to catch it. I don't know. What else can I try? The machine is off white with orange trim.

Hello Lucy,
First of all when you select zig zag does the needle move from side to side? if the answer is yes then the first thing to do is change the needle, this is the most simplist and common fault, make sure you put the needle in the correct way round, missing stitches or not doing the zig zag could well be either the existing needle in blunt or has a slight burr on the end, or the needle is slightly bent, or the needle is in the wrong way round, any of these will cause the needle to be too far away from the hook and will not catch the stitch to make the loop, failing that take the top off the machine and oil it, preferably with thin oil such as WD40, the very very worst it can be is the machine has gone out of time which is very unlikely, try these first in the above order, I will be very surprised if it does not work, also make sure the machine is threaded corectly. If I remember your machine is either off white or blue but correct me if I am wrong, feel free to e-mail me if the problem is not cured, there was a problem years ago where the top nylon cam broke into bits on these models but rare.
