I've just done this job. I used a pair of long nose pliers which did the job fairly easily, so no need for special tools. Yes if you turn too quick you may split the gaiter, but I'm not sure that WD40 is the answer, as it may perish the rubber (silcon grease is okay if you have it) how about a bit of plain water? Take your time and follow this advice and it won't take you as long as it took me!!! By the way the

On Mondeo 2003 TDi the rear offside caliper screws back in
anti clockwise. On rear nearside screw them in clockwise.
If you give a few turns in wrong direction they come loose and
you have to apply pressure after seating correctly and turn to send them back. It is a long job if you dont have correct tool.Dont turn
too fast or gaiter will split. Apply wd40 to help caliper spin in rubber gaiter.
