YAMAHA VIRAGO KEEPS BACKFIRING/POPPING JUST OFF TICKOVER?

535 VIRAGO STARTS WITH NO CHOKE,BUT POPS AND BACKFIRES ALL OF THE TIME.EVEN WHEN RIDING.

You need to adjust your mixture screw. It sounds like it is running to rich. You can tell by the fact that fuel is going into the exhaust on the over run which ignites from the heat of the exhaust creating a popping sound. In any good repair manual should describe how to adjust the mixture screw on the carb. It may even be in the owners handbook. Always remember to adjust by little amounts as small incriments can make a big differance. If you run the bike to lean it wll pink were the extra air in the combustion chamber ignites from the heat of the piston.

Hi shawn think you may need a full sevice, check plugs for colour, that will tell you if both barrels are firing the same mixture should think plugs will be black as you can start without choak. Even may need carbs to be striped to check that jets are clean and everyting is in order, carbs may need balancing. would be suprised if it is not a carb problem. Hope this is of help to you bro
