BIOS wont detect my hdd?

I am building my first comp, and when i went through the BIOS and the IDE HDD auto detect on the BIOS, it wouldnt detect my hdd. I have the hdd plugged in correctly. What are some troubleshooting processes that I can go through?

Check that you have the jumpers set correctly on the hd (ie slave/master cs) if that makes sense
