When I put the main beam on the headlights go off. Any suggestions?

When I turn the headlights to main beam the headlights go off. The side lights still stay on but the headlights go out. I have changed the relays around to see if one of them was not working and that did not fix the problem. Could it be something to do with the control stick which puts the main beam on?
My car is a 2.2 Vauxhall Sintra

check both bulbs high beam filaments are ok if so ,sugest put on dip beam and turn ignition off ,if the lights do not turn off to side lights i suspect your problem is with your dim/dip relay.

I'm not trying to be funny, but, have you checked the bulbs haven't both blown?
