Replacing battery pack Veritas R8?

My alarm has started intermediately bleeping/humming during the night more noticable from the outside, I've checked the power pack unit on the wall downstairs and its displaying red.
I'm under the impression that the battery may require replacing. I've taken the screws out of the front panel and an alarm sounds (tamper proof alarm) which sets the tamper light on the control panel.
My question(s) are:
1) Do I turn off the mains power for the alarm before changing the pack.
2) Do you know where I can get a replacement battery from i.e. B&Q
3) When I've changed the battery, will the alarm automatically reset i.e. tamper light go off on the control panel or will I have to enter an Engineer code.

The alarm i think was fitted back in 1996 and the battery replaced in December 2001. The previous owner hasn't left any documentation regards operating or maintaining the alarm. So any help will be appreciated.

powering system down may not be necesary, pull battery pack out and go to your local radio shack, lowes, or home depot.
you're looking for whatever the voltage is on your battery
(usually 12v4ah-12v8ah). again if you are not sure consult a professional, usually however you turn your system off is also how you reset it

Sorry, my mistake...... battery first then mains...
If you would like the engineer/installers manual, leave me your email address here and I will mail it to you. It has the default engineer code , and how to fully reset to factory settings and reprogram info, which all together should get your system back to normal.
( sorry for my error, I was thinking of a totally different system )

You are right to change the backup battery, they should be changed about every 3 years,Screwfix direct sell the batteries for less than a tenner.
I am not familiar with the veritas procedure for batt replacement but usually it's connect mains first, then battery, followed by enter your security code to silence alarm. You can get a user manual for free from :-

http://alarmhelp.net/downloads/v8c8r8userguild.pdf

you will need acrobat reader to view it.

The bleeps you are getting just might be a maintenence alarm , if that is so you will need the engineer code to clear it.

I hope this helps you !
