Is it dangerous to block the overflow pipe on my shower?

Water started pouring out of the overflow pipe on my Triton Opal shower. I noticed that if I block up the overflow, the water comes back out the shower head as normal. Is it safe to do this? What's wrong with it?

no it's not safe to do it, that's what it is there for.

your prv has activated for some reason (pressure relief valve)
