I have a leon 1.8 20v t and when mine was doing what you said it turned out to me my MAF sensor (mass air flow) changed it and my car was fine . try unplugging the maf its just after the air box and if the car runs better then thats the answer. They cost about £70 quid on and exchange basis. if you want more info look on one of the VW owners forums . hope this helps

check fuel filter, fuel pump, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distibuter cap could have small crack, those are cheap to change too. Oxygen sensor could be bad. do you have any engine light alarms?
