How can you tell if the Rainbow E series, motor is defective?

How can I tell if the Rainbow E series motor is defective. The copper wire on one side of the motor is burned and the small metal holding the ground wire next to it , also got burned some. Is it the copper wire burned or the need of that metal holding the ground wire that is keeping the machine from having power?

I asked how can you tell if the motor on a E-Series Rainbow is defective because I took it in to a shop and they claimed it was the motor, which would cost me $500 to fix. I thought that was ridiculous. Brought it home ,took it apart myself and with an old cord, I put the wires directly on the motor (ground & power) and I was so relieved that the motor worked. The motors for the E-series cost no less than $240.
Anyway, it wasn't the motor, it was the cord, which cost me $19.00. The hard part was how to dismantle the vacuum, but found that all I had to do was snap off the sides, unscrew the screws on each side, and the top came off.
