when i drive it whines i press the clutch and it shuts up has the gearbox gone or has something else gone

sounds like the thrust race bearing inside your gearbox bellhousing is worn and needs replacing,it is a part of the clutch assembly and you should get someone to check that your flywheel/clutchplate and pressure plate are ok aswell while they are fixing the noisy thrust race bearing !
