my renault espace clutch is stiff and bites at bottom but always grinds int?

how do i know if i need a new clutch, clutch cable or clutch pedal for my espace. I have just bought the car and the clutch bites at the very bottom. The pedal is a little stiff and makes it a bit uncomfortable when having to stop and start. Also the car always grinds into reverse. I have heard it could be one of any 3 of the above faults but please how can i check as i have just been quoted £218.80 for a new clutch.

hi my 51 plate 2.0 16v espace clutch biting point sits at the very top and has recently started slipping/ juddering, is it time for a new clutch or can it be adjusted

hi there i had the same problem, i went to mr clutch had it done and that was the worse place i have ever used for clutches, wherever you go steer clear of mr clutch, they may be cheap but do take my advise .

hi probably best to start with new clutch cable and it can be adjusted when needed i but two new clutches in one cheap and one french model did not help problem. pedal can be checked by renault but is unlikely cheers ben

Same symptoms on my espace, but the cause was first cable adjustment (easy, but get your local garage to do it if you are not confident), then subsequently a bent clutch pedal. The design of these components is so BAD that you are likely to encounter deformation in the pedal or the pedal box before the clutch itself fails. These problems can be solved by a good garage, and still probably cheaper than prematurely replacing the clutch.

I have a G Espace 2.2TD 1999 MK3, and have signs of clutch problems (amongst others..). Mine had a bit of a stiff clutch, and has now also become a bit reluctant to engage without graunching. Much research shows:
Most likely problem is failure of master cylinder - the originals are a very poor design and likely to fail repeatedly. Entire Master/slave/pipework has to be replaced (5-7 hours labour).
