I switched off my engine in the winter with my windscreen wipers half-up. There was a cold snap that night, and heavy ice on the screen in the morning. When I switched the engine on the next day, the wipers tried to start and in doing so must have jumped the mechanism. They are now half-way up the screen!! When I switch them on they go up first, then down and then return to the midway point!! Any ideas??

Lift your bonnet up and look under the windscreen and you'll see the mechanism for the wipers. Chances are that when they were frozen on the screen and they tried to work that the pivots moved without the wiper (because it was stuck to the screen!) the pivot probably returns to the correct position but the wiper is slighlty out of sync. Sounds like you just need to line the wiper back up with the pivot under the bonnet. Little bit of elbow grease and no money involved!
