it could be just a breather pipe from rocker cover etc blocked.
vectra ecotec engines suffer from this as they like to breathe well, common as the car gets older.

same thing happened to me, i had my mass airflow meter replaced, try cleaning your idle control valve (ICV).

it really depends on the age of the car.if there is high mileage you should check the air/fuel mixture,the timing,the spark plugs and leads and the fuel pump. all these are are possible after 70k or there abouts.
