Craftsman 18HP Engine -- Rebuild or Trash?

My parents' Craftsman lawn tractor (model 917.272759) purchased in 2003 has been giving them a lot of trouble ever since they bought it. The last Sears tech that looked at it said it had "considerable scoring and binding in cylinder" and that the engine would need to be replaced. Naturally, it's out of warranty. Another small engine repair shop basically said the mower wasn't worth fixing. Are they really out of luck with the mower? Is it possible to get a rebuilt engine, or are they better off getting a new mower?

Thanks,
J

you should really just replace the engine yourself its not that hard and theres plenty of hand books to tell you how. in the end itll be worth it because craftsman are one of the best tractors out there.
