rattling sound after re-fitting cambelt on a 94 M Vauxhall Astra?

wondered if the timing was slightly out.
Gary Bentley, September 2007
Timing is automatic as it has pre-tensioner.
So long as you got TDC before removing the belt (ie the markings on the cam sprokets point up and the crankshaft mark points to the pointer) the timing is correct.
Remove camcover and start engine. Listen and look for anything that is making the noise. It may be the pre-tensioer as you may have to renew it (once you've slacken it off sometimes they 'slip' and can;'t hold their tension). The tensior should be static, but if it moves in and out a lot (espcially with hard revs) then its slipping. Get a new one.
Otherwsie it may be the cambelt itself rubbing on the back of the cambelt cover.
