MTD Lawn Tractor wont start?

I have a MTD Lawn tractor - it used to start 1st time / every time until the last few weeks - now I need to jump start it from my car every time. I tries to turn but is very weak - not enough to start the engine. Then I run it for 1 to 2 hours but as soon as the engine stops it wont start - is this a knackered battery? Also, should I take the battery off when it is not in use - i leave it covered outside at the moment until out garage is built - could this have caused the problem?

Many Thanks

As the engine starts when you jump the battery from your car this leaves only two possible causes:

1. The charging system may be faulty. With the engine running connect a multimeter to the battery this should show at least 13 volts. If it shows less than this check that the alternator drive belt is tight, and that all connections are clean and tight. If all these checks are good then you may need a new alternator.

2. The battery may not be holding a charge. Check the battery voltage after the engine has been off for an hour or two, if its less than 12.2 volts change the battery.
