whirlpool adp 136 wh/wp what is causing fault?

whirlppol Dishawasher adp 136 wh/wp. when I select any programme the dishwasher fills as normal then drains itself straight away, this cycle is repeated meanwhile the programme select knob moves round. The dishwasher fills as normal one more time and then the appliance just stops. The whole scenario I have described takes about 5 minutes. the washer rotating arms do not move during the whole process. I over rode the door mechanism so I could see the whole situation happening. If I manually moved the programme selector knob onto the next programme the washer rotating arms move for a moment spraying water out of them, but then they stop. I would appreciate any ideas as to what component could be unserviceable. obviously the fill and drain system appears to be functioning ok.

thanks for any help given

With reference my previous fault, whilst investigating my defect I put the dishwasher on its side. I found a tube full of sludge so I gave it a clean. Started the dishwasher and it appeared to work ok. Later on the same problem came back. I reckion that I had dislodged something during moving the dishwasher. I put the dishwasher back on its side. I found a component with a few tubes going into it some sort of diaphragm which was connected to the drain line. I removed this component and found it full of sludge and old foodstuff. I cleaned this out and refitted. The dishwasher now works as good as new( I've had it now for over 7 years). Any faults were the dishwasher programme does not move on I would suggest u look for blockages in the filters or elsewhere. I've had this type of fault with my washing machine before where I normally found an old sock trapped in the drain filter line. Hope this can help anyone and save expensive call outs.
