How do I loosen the belt on my 1999 Scott, by John Deere, 1742G?

I just replaced my old ragged belt with a new one...suposedly of the same length. Problem is that it is too tight. I can't find a service manule after 8 years and can't figure out how to loosen it. Any help?

I just found out how to tighten the tractor drive belt today so I think I can help you. When you replaced the belt you may have noticed that one of the idler pulleys is mounted in a slot on the bottom of the tractor. Loosen the nut holding the pulley on and slide the pulley in the desired direction to loosen/tighten. I wish I had know this before I was told to by a new belt ($27+) because the tractor movement was lagging/surging.
Of course since your post was 2 years ago you probably figured this out already but maybe this will help someone else.
