Many alternators contain a small component called a diode trio. Unlike the 6 power diodes which convert the stator output from ac to dc, the diode trios sole function is to tricle a small amount of voltage from the alt output circuit to the side of the charge light not already hooked up to the bat or ign sw. Where an unaprised "mechanic" may pass the alternator on an output test , he may not be aware of the existance of the diode trio, eventhought that charging circuit is successfully keeping the battery charged up
