can a thermostat in a car sometimes stick closed and then reopen again?

I have a car that the fluid iss not leaving the radiator but I don't think I have a cracked head yet I'm wondering if I replace the thermostat if that will take care of the engine from overheating

Yes. One way to check a thermostat is to put it in boiling water. They can stick and then work again. Best to change it if it malfunctions, they are cheap enough.
