How can I stop airbag warning light flashing continuously on my Nissan Micra?

My Nissan Micra 03 reg has been back to the main dealer 4 or 5 times since I purchased it in March this year. The problem is the airbag warning light keeps continually flashing and it's driving me mad! The car is a three door model so I have to move the seat if I have passengers to allow access to the rear seat. I have been told by JFE Nissan in Exeter that the problem is to do with the connectors and wiring under the front seats but despite paying £90 pounds for them to fit a £13 clip! on the last visit to them, they have still not resolved the problem. The main problem is that it is a 60 mile round trip to keep taking the car back to the dealer and every time this has to be done at my expense. I would be really grateful for any advice anybody is willing to give.

Can't believe the Mississippi method worked, but it really did! Thank you. I have a 2006 micra. Anyone know why it works?

Rachel, December 2019
thankyou the missisipi method has worked for me

mo, June 2019
It worked for me also.
Thanks was worried about this blinking.

Hi Paul
Thanks so much for the Mississippi method...it worked!!

I wrote recently that by cleaning the white connector by the driver's seat belt pre-tensioner, the flashing light problem disapeared. It did, for 6 weeks but now it is flashing again!

Simon Haas, February 2017
I tried the reset with inc key but the flashing light came back after a few days so not a proper cure. The car was then connected to a diagnostic device which highlighted the driver seat belt press tensions, part of the same warning light systems. The b post inner trim was removed and a white connector near the inertia reel was simply cleaned. The problems of flashing light has gone. Simon Haas

Mississippi method worked for me too! Thanks, Paul :)

1. Turn the key from off to on.

2. Watch the airbag light closely. It will stay on for a few secs. and then as soon as it blinks off (the start of the flashing), turn the key off instantly.

3. Count to 5 (1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi . . . .)

4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times until you have done the cycle three times.

5. Now turn the key on and watch the light. It will start blinking in a different, slower manner. This is diagnostic mode. You can watch this for a little while, no hurry.

6. Now turn the key off again, Count to 5 like in step 3 again, and turn back on. If the procedure worked, the airbag light will not be flashing.

Other two methods did not work. Had heard my car would fail its MOT with the light flashing so you have saved me money.

Hannah, January 2017
Yep,tried the Mississippi method and seat belt/airbag light has now stopped flashing!

Kevin, January 2017
just tried the Mississippi method on my 2006 micra and it worked
thankyou

I have nissan micra k12 53reg same problem airbag light keep flashing, by disconnecting switch under driver seat then twist it and connect it back on and reset the light that solve the problem for me.

Ali, July 2015
Great!! Many thanks from the netherlands!! :) It worked!!

Rebecca, February 2015
I've finally solved the problem of the airbag light on my wife's micra by reconnecting the plug on the front drivers side seatbelt, that's all it was not the plugs under the seat. I hope this helps

bazmabbs, September 2014
Thank you very much from Sweden, it fixid it the first time.

Kristian Solli, August 2014
Yeah, it worked. Well done and thank you.

John Hutchings, July 2014
My light came back on but it's worked again. Making a note of his long it stays off so I'm ready for septembers mot! Don't want to have to replace my car over a faulty light! It's been to the garage and they say it's light that's faulty and airbags are fine. Solution would be new steering column at £1k!!! Cars only worth a couple hundred quid over that!!!

Nissan Micra K12 2005, airbag light flashing after long period of no battery.

Great result in 2 minutes!!

Great job!!!Brilliant! Thanks!!!

miragata, June 2014
Thank you so much, i'd just bought the car off someone secondhand today, and on the journey home it started flashing. I was so relieved when this method worked; thank you for saving me an unnecessary trip to the garage!

Tilda, May 2014
Further to my post below - I tried again using the "on/off" system and counting. It did finally work. Not sure how long it will last for this time.

TP, May 2014
My airbag first started flashing in Sept 2012 and then again in summer 2013. Each time used the method of counting to 5 seconds etc. Today 25th May started flashing again - drat! Hasn't initially worked but wonder if it is because car is hot? I note that flash went into a slower mode (must have been dianostic mode but as I did not have paper work with me - was trying to remember from memory I did turn off but not on again). I had today also moved forward the passenger seat. Tomorrow morning I will try again and fingers crossed it will work. If this is a common fault with Nissans why dont they do a recall? I have a 2003 (53 plate) 1.2 S Micra.

Wow a year since I last posted !

Thanks for the nice comments

Whoever posted the original 7x3, 1x3, 10 second solution, you’re a LEGEND, £50 Diagnostics + £150 fix estimated, and bet you they would have used the same method to clear the problem.

M.O.T Tomorrow

Many Many Thanks

Mines an old 99 micra k11 and I tried the opening door, then pushing the courtesy light switch 7 times. It worked. No more flashing airbag light.

I was pulling my hair out...after stripping out the dashboard & airbag & checking connections. had visions of having to replace airbag & sensors. Did what james recommended...worked a treat.

Hud, January 2014
Your a legend it really works, my car in for mot tomorrow would have failed, just done what you recommended thanks

Pauline, November 2013
PS
I did unplug and plug the under seat connectors on both sides a few times before going through the procedure. It may have helped. Then the "Mississippi" method.

David ADI, October 2013
I have a 2007 1.2 Acenta and I tried all the options! The one that worked for me was the 5 second Mississippi method. It took a few times to get the sequence right (especially catching it when it first flashes off), but it's worth persevering! My light reset after the three 5 sec (Mississippi) parts and did not go into slow flashing mode at the fourth turn on. Great! Hope it stays off!

David ADI, October 2013
Just tried this method on my 53 plate Micra only had the car two weeks and the airbag light started flashing. Worked first time thankyou!!!

Emma, August 2013
thanks, just done the same thing and its sorted;)

they are the source of the problem

Hi I tried the tip and it initially worked. But it starts flashing again after a while! What do I need to do? I got a Micra 1.2 Year 2002.

Irshad, May 2013
This is an easy fix in almost all nissan micra's 02 to 06 etc.(as a common fault) You must fix this, especially now as dashboard warning lights are now part of uk M.O.T since march 2013, and if flashing then airbag will not deploy.

Fix only takes a minute or two and is done by turning key in the ignition in a set way to do a diagnostic test and reset of dash/airbag warning lights. (do not start the engine whilst carrying out this procedure).

There are several ways to start the diagnostic reset test and stop the flashing airbag symbol.

One way is to put key in ignition and turn so that you can see the airbag/light. Once it starts flashing let it flash 7 times then switch off ignition...DO THIS 3 TIMES.

Then switch on ignition till airbag flashes once and switch off immediately after only 1 flash! (you must be quick) NOW YOU MUST DO THIS 3 TIMES

Now! when you switch the ignition on, the airbag light will flash at a much slower and longer rate. This is GOOD and what you need to SEE as this means that the car is doing a diagnostic RESET and after 10 seconds you can switch off the ignition.

The airbag light should now be reset and the airbag will now work normally and the flashing symbol will be gone!

I'm happy for the success your all having

Paul's method has worked fine for me over the 6 years I've had the '55 plate Micra 1.2 S. It reset beautifully about a year ago but has started flashing again but in a different pattern. After resetting it now flashes one long flash followed by three short flashes.

Can anyone tell me what that means and how I can fix whatever is causing it?

Andy, September 2012
Many Many Thanks this worked a treat.local dealer wanted to charge £85 for diagnostic plus ex amount of money for parts. makes you wonder if they already know and are taking the mickey.

Hey ! just tried Paul's suggestion, thinking it was a load of "BALONEY!" but it works!! Thank you very much, it was driving me mad and it's not even my car it belongs to my niece, won't I be her favorite Uncle when I tell her!!

Ray Cappleman, September 2011
I had the problem of airbag warning light continually flashing on my Nissan Micra sport + 1200cc 2006 reg. I replaced the electrical connectors under both seats and soldered the wires instead.
I followed PAUL's method ( JAN 2010 ) of turning ignition key on and then immediately off at the start of the red light flashing, and counting unto 5 then switching back on then off . I did this 3 times until the red light started to flash slow. I let it flash slow for about 10 seconds and then turned the ignition off. When I started the car immediately after this procedure the problem had gone. Thank you PAUL, your method does work. I would mention that during the whole operation I had all doors closed and the passenger side airbag switched on with the key.
I don't know if keeping the doors closed was necessary but thank goodness it worked for me. I am convinced this method will work if faults like poor wiring connections are the cause. My advice would include checking and repairing all visible electrical connections before trying the procedure. I drive very carefully and am terrified of the damned air bags exploding in my face. The law is the law but I wish I could switch the airbags off permanently.

Francis Robert Cbarles, September 2011
Thanks James

I'd just like to say, I have never had to
disconnect the battery ( Airbags are disabled while the light flashes).

Never had any problems doing it this way.

As an update.
These under seat connectors are very poor quality
and prone to intermittent connection. hence all the posts here ...

Eventually. I will replace them with high quality connectors like "Deans Ultra"
As this fault will continue to return otherwise.

I must have reset my Micra 5 or 6 times now (including cleaning/moving the connectors).

I don't like driving with the Light flashing (airbags disabled)
So tend to reset quickly.

Paul, August 2011
I would also like to thank Paul for his extremely helpful advice on this problem.

On my Micra Activ 2006 model both connectors are in use. My guess is that it is the yellow slightly larger connector that is part of the air bag wiring system.

I disconnected the battery and then took both connectors apart and sprayed them.

When it came to carrying out the reset procedure for the air bag I had to go through the whole of the ignition switch procedure several times before it worked.

It seems that one has to get parts of the procedure just right for it to work.
In particular the part of the procedure where one waits 7 sec with a constant light and then the light starts to flash seems to need to be monitored closely.
My impression is that one needs to switch the ignition off very fast as soon as the first flash of the red sitting person is seen .

Of course as I had disconnected the battery I then needed to enter the security code into the radio. Interestingly the ESP OFF indicator light did not show up. The Micra handbook had led me to believe it would. Anyway I still went through the window and steering wheel setup as the handbook described, as though I was resetting the ESP OFF indicator.

You have done an excellent job here Paul and saved me a lot of money and hassle.

Thank you.

Ha ha, This is very funny.
Paul, thanks alot. I will go to a garage anyway. I have also probs with yellow warning and the chain has to be fixed. O my God, the cheapest offer are in Germany £1.100,- in Denmark £1.500,- Also boot lock trouble, water in contact...
Think the Micra project are in a expensive age now...:-(

Paul Q , as posted earlier
You may have a Fault elsewhere on the Airbag system
the Reset can't work until the fault is repaired.

My Micra S has Two connectors under the passenger seat, Only One is connected the other hangs free.

I'd advise you to take your car to a garage
for a full airbag diagnostic test.

Ann.all you have done is Reset the airbag warning circuit

Without clearing the fault (dirty/poor quality connectors)
the light would not go out.

A flashing light means the Airbags are Disabled
your warning light is now Off
your Airbags are now Active and should deploy as intended
in an accident.

Paul

Paul, June 2011
May 2011 Tried 'Paul method' along with WD40 on the underseat sensor/connectors with success. Had to do 3 cycles though. Thanks.
Does any one know if the airbags are still able to deploy?

I have just now tried the suggestion by Paul to fix a 2001 Nissan Primera M6 and it worked perfectly!
I have an NCT next week and after spending €272 on a service and pre-NCT check I was told it would fail because of the flashing air-bag indicator. If I wished they could spend a few hours removing seat etc to check the loom and wiring in general to fix my problem at €70 plus VAT per hour ... Pauls method took 3 mins and worked the first time I did it properly (i.e actually said Mississippi !) Thanks Paul

hi.anyone know if the nissan micra k12 2010 registration air bag its the same with micra k12 o7 reg ?its looking the same but i am not sure.i cant find my micra driver air bag.thank you.

Hi. Lucy

That sounds steep for a relatively simple job.

See if you can find a local independent Auto electrician
explain the symptoms and likely cause.

I'd be surprised if you can't find a cheaper price.

I have a nissan micra 54 plate, and my air bag light also flashes it has done for about 2 years now, when it comes to be serviced or mot, i just reset it with the start on/off suggestions which works for about a week, I decided to take it to a nissan dealer they want 165 pounds so fix the problem saying i need new connectors as they have lost connection in the side airbags or i can buy the connector and do it myself but is is only nissan dealers that supply the correct parts?

I'm writing from France: i had the same problem with my Nissan micra, i've just tried the PAUL solution: it worked.
Merci beaucoup Paul!

aurore, November 2010
I had this problem too a total of three times. First time was two years ago and I did the ignition thing to reset it. After a year the problem came back; I did the ignition thing again, and again it worked - for like a week, then it reapeared :(

So then I cleaned the contacts under the driver's seat and that seemed to permanently fix the problem. Apparently the contact surfaces get tarnished after a while. So what you do is this:

1) Unplug the battery. You don't want the airbag going off while you're doing this, it'll probably kill you.
2) Undo the bolts to the driver's seat, ie. the ones that are on the "rail" on which the seat slides back and forth on.
3) Move the seat as far back as possible and tip the whole thing back as far as you can (including rail).
4) Get on your back down and dirty :p Under the seat there's wiring - disconnect the contacts and basically clean them any way you can, jiggle them around, that sort of thing.
5) Do this list again but in reverse order, connecting the battery last.

And voila! The beauty of this, if it works for you, is that it isn't fooling the system with resets or fake fixes - if it works then you know it's because of dirty wiring and not a faulty airbag that might not deploy when you actually need it to.

Alex, November 2010
My airbag light started flashing continuously I did the turn on turn off suggestion above but it didnt work. I found another post that said to try the following and this has stopped the light flashing:
Leave the door open and turn your ignition to on (not start) immediatly press the little button that connects with the door that turns in internal light on 7 times within 10 seconds then start the car. This resets it. Hope it works for you.

i have also the same problem of air bag flashing light warning in my nissan micra 5 door hatchback 1998 model and i tried the above procedure but it doesnt worked. please some one help?????

khan, August 2010
It just resets the airbag warning light.

You can test this easily

1. reset the light as below.

2. unplug the airbag sensor plug, under the front passenger seat.

The warning light will now turn on.

Remember while the light is flashing, the airbags are disabled.

Paul, July 2010
Hi Everyone,

Can you tell me whether the fix supplied by Paul is a reset or a permanent disabling of the airbag light? Also, does this stop the airbags from working?

Please let me know, Thanks

Hi all,

I can confirm the key on/off proceedure works!!!
I am a driving instructor and this fault occured the night prior to a test for one of my pupils.

The dealer offered no decent help. So I tried this method and .....sorted! No light on since.

But I do need to confirm with a thorough discussion with my dealer. Is the airbag still operating??

Hi Paul, thank you for your solution to the flashing airbag light problem. Mine just came on today, on it's way back from the MOT test centre believe it or not and I tried what you suggested , it worked perfectly. No more very annoying flashing light.....thank you.

Helen, April 2010
I tried the solution above and it indeed did work. Feel like I just turned off the light that way and the airbag will not work now. I can take it to get serviced but at least the blinking light is gone until I do.
Thanks

"If you have the airbag light, it will show steady for a few seconds (the manual says 7 secs) after you turn the key from off to on (but not start) and then start to flash. Here is how to reset it:

If it does not work the first time, just repeat the steps again."

I went to the link http://www.nissanforums.com/966228-post7.html pointed out in this e-mail thread (sept 07). Took a copy and went out in the car (through the pouring rain) and used the instruction as it says on the tin. Guess what it works! No light now and the wife is delighted (pardon the pun), can't be bad and saved a packet in the process. Thanks to who ever you are.

i also had this persistant airbag warning light flashing suddenly out the blue one day and after taking it to the garage they couldnt work out what it was causing it. i got told to bring it in again for the mechanic to attach his computer to it to locate if it was the airbag connectors. that night i searched on the web and came across this link :- http://www.nissanforums.com/966228-post7.html

which was on this website and this fixed the problem. so thank you, whoever put this solution online. it help save me £££'s and another trip to the garage.

DrB. IF there is a Fault in the Airbag system

The Reset Procedure won't be able to stop the light flashing .......

This would confirm the Garage Diagnosis

Paul, March 2009
My nissan micra's airbag light is flashing for the third time in its 5 year life. the first two times i has it fixed at evesham's nissan dealership, this time we took it to a different local nissan dealership. they charged £300 for a service today but did not switch off the light. Now they want £250 to fix the airbag light and say the door has to come off to do this? can this be right?
If I follow the key trick of resetting the light and then WD40 the connectors will this mean the airBAGS ARE NO LONGER DISABLED?

DrB, February 2009
Where exactly is the connector located under the seat, I take it it is under the carpet some where, driver, passangar and do you need to remove the carpet?

Paul, December 2008
From an earlier post

"I work for nissan. The problem is indeed to do with the wiring under the seats. Next time you go to the dealership insist that they install a new harness (the wiring connector under the seat). This will always solve the problem when done right but please get it done straight away cause while that light is on , if you crash, the air bags will not deploy.

The technicians at the dealership do know what they are doing. they do upto 4 years or hands on training with nissan. Please dont doubt them

when my dad took my car into nissan dealership he got the airbag light turned off for £150 but it came back on he went back in and they said honestly there is no point paying this repeatedly it wont effect the airbags deploying will it effect them or not please cause reading this has concerned me?

zoe20, December 2008
Alex. the problem appears to be an intermittent connection
on the seat connector, due to a poor quality connector.

I sprayed the connector with WD40 to clean the contacts
and have had no further problems, after resetting the warning light in my original post.

Please be aware that the Airbag Safely System
is Disabled when the light is Flashing
and offers no protection in an accident !

Paul, November 2008
I tried Pauls solution yesterday and was amazed that it actually worked. Good riddance flashing light!

However now I can't shake the feeling that I've cheated and bypassed the real problem, I mean the light started flashing for a reason right? Be it dirty or loose cables under the seat or something else, something is clearly WRONG. What happens when I crash into a brick wall, will the airbags go off at all? Or will they randomly go off on a sunday drive with my nine year old son sitting in the front seat?

This is curing the symptoms, not the disease. I'm letting a professional look at my car so I can sleep easy.

Still, good tip though :)

Paul's answer worked for me too

hi ,
thank god someone else had this problem.i've tried the reset method but its not turning the flashing light off. where are the airbag connectors exactly? i have taken seat out and can now see a small loom and an air hose running along the floor but nothing connected to the seat.the seat is sitting outside on the ground at the moment?
Thanks

Rodge, October 2008

Car: Nissan Micro 5 door SE Diesel 2003
Sympton:Airbag Warning light blinking
Remedy: Gently squeezed together airbag connectors under front seats to make sure they fitted OK and used reset procedure given in previous answer. Job Done!

PK, May 2008
That reset procedure saved me £70 for a diagnostic visit to my Nissan Dealer.

Thanks Paul

Mike, January 2008
I saved £35 using the method in the link below
I did this around 3 weeks ago
If it returns I'll be looking at the under seat connectors

http://www.nissanforums.com/966228-post7.html

If this does NOT reset the light
take the car to a dealer as a fault is present

Paul, December 2007
This can not be fixed easily with out a error code reader so hear is my story on how i got it sorted:

I called Nissan who wanted £60 to look at it and couldnt fit me in for 4 days dispite the airbag system currently being disabled and the car not efectivly being safe to drive plus I have had nothing but problems with Nissan (Glyn Hopkin) so didnt want to give them my money. Ended up at a Bosh approved garage and the guys were fantastic. Plugged in and it was a fault in the side air bag loop, it turns out the conectors under the seat had become dry and the metal had tarnished so when the seat was moved back suddenly the connection was lost. They cleaned up the connectors and reset the error and low and behold all fixed. No expencive loom no trips to and from the garage, turned up at 4pm sat and drive away £35 lighter at 4.30pm. Cant ask for better really.

Carl, November 2007
Hi there can I ask how you got on with this as I'm having the same problem, my airbag light started flashing yesterday but I've had problems before with Nissan dealer charging me nearly £1000 earlier in the year for a new timing chain, I'm fed up paying huge amounts for jobs that could cost half somewhere else, my car is only 4 year old and I've done nothing but pay our for it!

Mel, October 2007

Mandy, take it somewhere local as it sounds as though they haven't a clue what they're doing. There are plenty of independant garages that will be able to diagnose that problem. Please do not allow anyone who is not qualified to fiddle with it ..... it could end up costing you a lot of money if the airbags go off!
