When I use to select a washing cycle and depress the on/off button, the mains-on light and door locked light both illuminated and the machine started operating. Now only the mains light comes on and the door locked light does not illuminate and the machine does not start.

I had a similar problem and was going crazy checking fuses and breaker switches and so forth and so on and finally I reached in and gave the tub a spin and pushed the on button and it started !!! Don't know why. I had just finished a load of clothes and the machine was working fine. I put in another load and the machine wouldn't start ..... until I gave the tub a spin.
