faulty alternater?

bought a second hand alternater for my mk 5 escort 1.8 130 but its off a 1.6 escort. would this alternater give enough amps off to charge battery as battery light on dim

Connect a multimeter to car battery with engine running.
Turn headlights on and check voltage. More than 12.8 volts shows that the alternator is providing a charge to the battery. The dim warning light may just be a poor connection at the alternator.
