I have an escort van, diesel and it is hard to start in the mornings?

My Ford escort van (1.8 diesel) is really hard to start in the mornings, when it eventually fires, you can turn it off adnd it will start fine for the rest of the day, is there any way I can fix this my self (I have already replaced the glow plugs)

when the orange light goes out.wait about 10 seconds and you will hear a click then turn the key to start it.after the orange light goes out the glow plugs are still energised until the timer goes out.this will give you a few more amps on your battery.

there is a fuel heater in the water fuel seperator. I use to drive a 85 Escort diesel and when started having that problem it was the fuel heater. you might also want to check the intake heater also to see if its working. Good luck. wish I still had mine.

Wait until the glow plugs have properly charged, there will be normally an orange light. Put the key in the ignition, turn once to turn the power on, then wait for them to charge, then start the engine.

If its still not starting properly after that, replace the glow plugs and change the fuel filter.

check fuel pipes at back of engine, they sometimes rub together and wear a hole in them. if ok it could be filter head(if its one with primer built in) the diaphragm is prone to getting perforated.
