when switched on there is a blank black screen with a flashing underscore cursor in the top left.

My laptop crashed and now it will not come on help

in order for you to see the cursor flashing, it prooves the following are working:-
1. CPU.
2. RAM.
3. VGA card,

I reckon its your hard disk has failed.
- Go into the BIOS (usually DEL key or F1).
See if your BIOS can see the hard disk.
- Listen to your HD, does it spin up ?
You should also be able to feel to spin up.
