Whirlpool 6th sense -- F4 fault?

Whirlpool
6th sense
ADP6940 IXM WH

Displays an 'F4'. We were sent a new 'circuit'-type board (I think?) Installed under the dishwasher - had all the wires plugged into it. Still gives same error. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

F04 indicates a fault in the heating circuit.
It can be a main board, wiring, thermostat or heater fault.
You would need to check the heater and thermostats with a multimeter to ensure they are not open circuit.
.
However, the first thing to try is a reset of the control board.
.
Turn the dial to off.
Turn the dial clockwise to the 6 o'clock position.
Press the start button 3 times
Turn the dial 1 position clockwise.
Press the start button 3 times.
.
This should erase the code.
Try the machine again.
If the code comes back, you need to check out the heating circuit.
If you change or repair any part, reset the board, then try again.

Thanks for all the useful info so far. We have had similar F4 issues, now more frequent/acute. My questions are:
1) is there any source for obtaining a service manual for this series Whirlpool dishwashers?
2) what do the sensors in the the well that holds the strainer and basket look like? any diagram available?

I love the suggestion about disassembling the unit, and am not shy about doing so - but love it when I have some form of reference or parts explosion in hand.

Any help at this time greatly appreciated.

Cleaning the filter helped me solve this problem. Just an advice - don't skip cleaning the filter too often that's what caused the error in the first place. I could hear something was stuck in the motor. Fortunately it came off by itself and now it's running again!

The F4 error, washer not draining....

After cleaning both the fliter and checking the hose to avail. We checked the motor and found the rubber piece stuck to it which is part of the detergent dispenser part B. Anyway, after removing this piece from the motor the washer is now working fine. Hope this helps.

RE: Whirlpool ADP 5966 - 6 years trouble free washing then I had an F4 problem. After cleaning and doing what the previous answers said, I disconnected the system, laid the washer on it side and opened the bottom (two screws at front). The problem was with a small motor that I believe pumps the waste water out. There was a rubber seal that had somehow wrapped itself around the motor thus stopping motor turning and pumping out waste. I have removed the seal completely, replaced and tested without the seal, all is ok! The motor is located towards the front of the washer. hope this helps

Repairman said it wasn't worth repairing, had a look on "how to mend it" and thought, water infill? - maybe a blockage? - I took out the easily removable plastic filters and the mesh thingy at the bottom of the dishwasher to give them a clean - they were quite slimy, and poured hot water into the well at the bottom, put the filters back - stuck my fingers in the salt holder to give it a stir - turned the dial to eco to get rid of the F4 fault display and Hey Presto it works!!

I had an F4 fault on a Whirlpool ADP7966 dishwasher which was at first an intermittant one but eventually became permanent. I cleared the fault by removing the strainer and thoroughly cleaning the part of the water sensor visable underneath.
