remove the diesel injector pipes, unplug the multi plug the the solinoid wires go in to and disconnect the battery.
using a dremel you can cut the top off the gaurd you need to cut an inch off.
once you have cut it off you will now see the solinoid deppending on model of van you may need to put a new solinoid in or just wire the old solinoid to the ignition live.
once you can see the solinoid if there are 2 wires that go in to 1 then just wire it to the ignition live on the back of the barrel.
if there are 3 wires then you will need to put a new solinoid in if thats the case you will need to cut another half an inch of the gaurd and the you can remove the solinoid with some mould grips the new solinoid you can purchess from ebay they are £11 and you will be able to you a socket to put the new one in.
once the new soliniod is in you will need to run a wire from the back of the barrel from the ignition live tho the top of the soliniod thbere is a 10mm nut and washer on the top of the soliniod that you will connect the wire to, use a ring connector and the fit to the solinoid job done.
this mybe time consuming (it took me 40mins to cut the top off the gaurd ) but it saves you a lot of hassle.
if you want to do the job by removing the pump then you might as weel change the timing belt and water pump aswell as these need removing to get the pump out.
