How can I upgrade from Windows XP to XP Pro without formatting drive?

I have both discs and have a laptop with Vista. I believe I need XP Pro working on the desktop to enable the laptop to connect to the Desktop via wi fi to use the Cable Broadband Internet Connection.
When I put in the XP Pro disc I get the message about trying to install an earlier version of XP.

? Vista will connect via wi-fi just as easy as xp ? what is the problem your having ? what error messages you getting have you tried re-setting firewall?

I guess the version of XP pro you have is older than the version of XP you have. Why don't you install vista on both and simplify the process?
