How can I fix my renault clio (W Reg) speedometer?

I too have a W reg clio and the speedometer has recently (last few days) been working and then not working at all on and off with no particular pattern. Renault are very expensive to carry out a diagnostic assessment and suggest it will be diffficult to find out what may be causing the fault as it is not 100% broken but on and off. Has anybody else had this problem and is there a solution? I am a young female driver and tend to drive alone and so am worried about anything that does not work properly on my car! Please help!Thankyou.

There are two types of speedometer connector 1)cable and 2)is electronic.
First one is driven by a gear mounted adjacent to the gearbox by cable, remove the cluster than disconnect the cable that goes in the speedometer wipe out with some lubrificant ,cable is long .The second one is electronic speedometer that has a tranducer you can check the tranducer by connecting the ohmmeter and check for resisitance if you got the reading between 50-120 ohms the tranducer is fine, than check electric connector located when you open the bonnet is on left side down to driveshaft.if your car got ABS system than the signal from the road speed signal is coming from the ABS sensors.Sorry for my english
