How can I fix my broken windscreen wipers, Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Sport 1999?

Ever since we got our Astra 2 years ago the windscreen wipers wouldn't work on intermittent, only normal or fast. Even then, you had to stop them at a certain time or else they'd stop right in the middle of the windscreen.
This week they've stopped in the middle of the windscreen and won't function at all now.
I'm guessing the motor has given up??
I've contacted a breakers yard who quoted about 40GBP for a new motor and linkage but wondered if this is something that can be easily fixed by myself to save some pennies.
Any hints?
Many thanks

Check the linkage mechanism. Sounds like it has been gradually seizing. See similar question about Corsa. To remove the water deflector in the Astra pull off the lower windscreen trim to access the clips holding it down.

Seems to be a common problem - is the outcome having a new linkage?

I have exactly the same fault on the same model and year of car and has just started, did you get a suitable resolution from the forums yet as I have been scanning though and not found what I am looking for yet?
