im now renting some premises from an absentee landlord and the alarm keeps going off and i would like to keep this one rather than pay to buy new one or pay big prices for an engineer to sort a probable simple problem.

Don't disable it. Locate the problem instead. The alarm panel will give you an indication of which devices triggered the system. Just check those. If it's a PIR (and it frequently is) you can usually reduce the sensitivity by an internal adjustment.
That way you get a reliable alarm and a protected premises.
