I have Bell South GH 9640. The answering machine works fine and so does one of the extra cordless phones. I thought one went dead so I replaced the battery. When I put it on the Base Unit it would not take a charge in spite of the base saying charging.

Hi,
If the new battery has wires going to a connector check they are the same way around as the old one.
Some replacements require you to change the wires depending to your model.
If the above is the case then it may well be that the battery has been damaged. Worth taking the battery from the working handset to test.
