Bosch wfk2401 motor not working?

Our washer recently stopped spinning (the washer fills with water, but then the drum simply does not spin). The Bosch serviceman charged us $100 to tell us it was the motor (just past the 5y warranty!) and that changing it was a 2-man job and would cost ~$600 ($300 for the motor and 300 for the labor). Given how expensive it is, I'm willing to change the motor or the brushes myself! I have a few follow up questions to the posts above:
1) which "above description" was the original post by John Verity Sept 2007 referring to (paragraph 3).
2) how can you tell if you need to replace the brushes or the whole motor?
3) can you do this from the front?

Hi
It is the second time this is happening to my Bosch WFK2401. The Motor Cost about $200 at partsamerica and the brushes about $40. Disconnect water and power. Open the back panel (Phillips screw and 4 Torx screws) The motor is in the bottom right. It is held with 2 M8 bolts and a 13mm socket work fine with a small ratched to remove them. One bolt is on the right side and you need to reach around the mounting bracket to get to it. The other bolt you see from the back. After the bolt are removed the motor can be easily removed by sliding the motor backward. When the motor is out of the bracket move it to the right and you clear the sheet metal. The second set of brushes I bought did not last long 1.5 year. The commutator was rough and need to be machined to get a nice surface. It took me 1/2 hour to get the motor out. All you need is a Phillips screw driver, Torx driver, a 13 mm socket and a side cutter for the wire ties. I hope this helps
