Simple (now I've found it) :-). Turn the whole front badge fully anti-clockwise. Insert key and unlock. Make sure (important) the badge is fully turned to the left. Bonnet open, job done. Remember the secret is to turn the badge fully left.

i just bought a 2001 ford mondeo and the bonnet release is indeed a key hole behind the front Ford badge on the grille, hope this helps

although there was a change in 2002 with fords using the ford badge on the front grill hiding the key hole. try turning the ford badge and there should be a keyhole for ignition key. put it in and turn and bonnet pops up
