never ending wash cycle on hotpoint WD440?

I have a 2 year old Hotpoint WD440 which stays in the wash cycle and does not move to rinse and spin. I think it's the heater element that is the cause as there is no heat on a 95 wash. How easy is it to replace and is this why the dryer is not working correctly also?

Thanks for the response. Will order a new heater. But one more question, is the heater for the washing machine the used for the dryer as well, or are there seperates??

heaters easy rear access panel off unplug thermistor in centre of element , unplug live neutral earth, sinle ten mm nut in centre slaken off then prise rubber clear of tub orifice, get a new one and refit. dryers likely to be retaining nut on the hot air fans loose causing it to rub and over heat this trips the o/h stat, one of the two on the front of the dryer duct. Turn the power off and put a small pin down the hole in the top of the stat tioll you here a click this is it rest. Remove the torque bolts which join the top and bottom halfs of the duct , lift the top half off, tighten the nut on the centre of the fan, checking height clearance. Refit.
