Hi im a lady driver who cna change tyre and check oil n water etc but thermostat sticking on my rover 25. Several garages have tried to imply that its the head gasket and are trying to charge 400 quid to replace. Given that I had that done only 20k ago , I dont think so. Anyway car starts to run a bit warm and the as soon as I go round a left hand bend the temp drops. ? I think sticking thermostat. No gunk in oil anywhere, runs perfect apart from this. I live in warrington, can anyone suggest a mechanic who will change thermostat without trying to rip me off for a full head gasket replacement. If anyone can help, please post here.many thanks

I guess the guy who origanaly asked this question has had his car fixed by now, but thought this may be handy for someone else. This is a fiddly job and you need nimble fingers. start by making some room around the thermostst housing which is located at back of engine block just behind cam belt. loosen and move pipes and cables etc out of the way. use 8mm spanner to undo the 3x therostat housing bolts. undo 2x bolts holding the big meatal pipe to back of block. remove thermostat housing and replace thermostat and seal. refit bolts and refill antifreeze etc. This is an easy job, but it is quite fiddly, took me a couple of hours in total.
