Better description of how to remove on a DC04.
The on/off button has a leg sticking down from top on the flat inside. At the bottom of the leg it hooks outwards towards handle of main body. The grey switch holder that the button fits into has a square hole that the hook at the bottom of the leg goes into (the small slot in the switch holder runs down to the middle of that square hole). A blade about 1.5mm thin and 2 -3mm wide must be pushed down that slot with the button very slightly depressed and the bottom of the blade moved towards the middle of the button so that the hook dissengages from the hole in the switch holder. You may have to put blade in first then a further thin blade between blade and edge of hook to further push hook away from switch holder. Pliers or mole grip needs to be used to gently grip button and pull it out of the switch holder. Once button out then a torx T15 headed screw will be seen. Unscrew this and the switch holder can be slid up and out of the Dyson main body. Wires connect: Brown inside and blue outside (nearest to you)with motor wires to left and mains wires to right

The switch on my DC04 is wired BROWN to both sides of the switch ( One BROWN from the power lead and one BROWN from the motor, that makes and breaks the circuit )and then BLUE to BLUE.

Thank goodness I read the above advice before I broke the plastic housing trying to prise it open with a screw driver! I found that the button switch prised off with gentle pressure of two fine screw drivers. To help make sure that I put everything back together properly, I took a couple of pictures before I started on the wires. The problem with my cleaner, was that the main cable had severed close to the rubber protection sleeve which sits inside the switch housing. As i didn't want to take the whole switch wiring apart, I cut and prepared the cut sections and fitted two screw type cable connectors to re-join them. This was a bit fiddly as space is tight in the switch housing but it all went back in. To prevent the same thing happening again, I secured part of the cable to the main body of the cleaner with a bit of my old friend gaffer tape and used a couple of matching yellow cable ties to secure it at the bottom where thier was a space to slot it through and secure it.Not bad for a girl eh!

You have to remove the yellow on /off switch first. This is actualy a cover to the switch below. I removed mine with x1 of the centre prongs of a fork. Bend the centre prong to 90 degress to the fork handle, and put a tiny kink at the end of that prong. (you should end up with a funny lookink "Z" shape. Bend the remaining x3 prongs totally out of the way. Keeping the yellow switch cover up - use pliers here- push the singular prong down the flat egde of the cover. ie inboard. When you think you have the clip pushed in pull the cover up with the pliers and - hey presto access to the actual sw and wires is revealed. BE CAREFUL WITH THE PLIERS.

I have just replaced the switch in a DC03 standup model. I took the side cylinder and all related bits off the top, gently prised the switch button off and then took out the screw underneath and this gave me full access to the switch and wires.

Hope this helps. There is not to much to these machines so just take things apart and remember in what order they came off
Cheers

In the DC01 there is a screw under the switch. Needless to say I destroyed the switch cover trying the instructions supplied in the listing!

Thanks for your help people. A life saver as the cable had split and was arcing inside the switch housing.

Just tried this, and your advice was helpful. But looking at the small hole on the inner face of the switch, which is nearly square in cross section, I wonder if a piece of spring steel wire might be better, as a means of pushing back the plastic barb? Also, I nearly cut the barb off, because the plastic is fairly soft, so I don't recommend using a blade!

you have to take the button off by pricing it off ,then you will csee a star screw to undo

wot wires go to the diffevernt terminals,i have an new switch but dont no wot wires gon on wot i have taken the old one off please help

amandaain@yahoo.co.uk, September 2005
The operating switch incorporates a self-retaining plastic barb. It can be removed by sliding a thin, but sturdy metal strip down the inner face of the switch. By applying outward pressure to the button you should be able to lift it from the housing. This then reveals a screw that frees the housing itself.
