acer e725 laptop but the screen has gone dim and is very difficlt to see. i have tried using the fn key and right arrow key but the brightness hasn't improved. please help.

Sounds like the screen inverter board has failed (for the backlight)
LCD laptop screens have a light source for backlighting the display.
Try eBay and look for the model laptop and you often get spares for instance LCD inverter boards for five pounds on average if you are confident to fit them yourself...
