My MP3 player is not recognised by computer?

When I turn on the mp3 player the word "starting" flashes on the screen but nothing happens. When i plug in into the PC it is not recognised (Windows XP). I can not format the MP£ because I can't pick it up. It is one of the many black chinese mp3 players that is unbranded with no modell number, MPMan style. There is a possibility that my wife completed wiped the disk last time she update the songs, trouble is I can't work out how to put them back. I have downloaded the firmware update files from the net. Help!!

I had this same problem .... I gather you have the usb connector cable. Plug it into your computer then plug in your mp3 player( If you dont hear the ding try the other usb port) If your computer dings then it has found it if not just check by right clicking my computer, explore then look to see if the drive is there? If not then goto Start, control panel, add hardware then follow the wizard. It should show up as a "storage device" worked for me. with xp you dont need the file manager programme that comes with the mp3 player i just right click on my music and "send to" (in my case, drive I)hope this helps.
