Panasonic Recorder DMRE55EB?

My recorder will not release the disc and seems to be self checking all the time. Has anyone had this problem and if so how to resolve it

Common fault with these.
Almost certainly a power board problem. Regulator IC001 gets far too hot during normal operation and is mounted on a totally inadequate heatsink on the board. I would look at this first. Replacements can be obtained online. STRG 6353. Use some heatsink compound on the replacement and consider mounting it on a more effective heatsink. The DMR E55 is notorious for the self checking problem. The machine usually lasts for a couple of years before playing up. However, if you are technically minded it is usually quite easy to sort this. A new regulator only costs a few pounds. You need a decent soldering iron, a bit of skill and the ability to take care. If you are not confident to tackle it, the best advice is to leave it to an engineer. Good luck -

On the machine while the machine is off, press and hold the stop and channel up buttons at the same time for about 5 seconds. If you have this problem often it may be you will need a new control module, about £30-£40.
