my desktop boots up as usual but then flips onto wallpaper only no icons, no start button or left lower bar - no lower bars at all. Using Xp Home on laptop Inspioron 8130 Dell. Was downloading music. I think it said something quickly about trogen and I hit fix/repair it nothing changed. I'm a grandma who needs help badly - I am on my other computer right now sending this

First thing you need to do is download some Anti Virus if you havent already got it and scan your Laptop to see if you have got rid of that Trojan. Normally it wouldnt give you a message if you have got rid of it, but better be safe than sorry i say.
What happens if you put your desktop screen showing nothing?(right click on desktop - Properties - desktop- select none) Do the Icons appear?
