how to replace a trendel-belt on a old singer model 66?

i put the belt on, but what do i clamp it with so i can adjust the tension? i think its from the early 1900. no moter just the belt hooked to a foot peddle OK. the belt is like a long leather shoe string. can you help????

Good morning,
For your 66K treadle belt you will need a belt hook, I am not sure if you can still get them or not from sewing machine shops, the only other place you are likely to get them is on e-bay probably with the belt, there is no easy way of joining the belt without the hook.
