ive tryed cleaning it and checking if there is any discs tht can fix it , ive had 3 replacements and they all do the same, i asked at a centre for fixings comps lasers etc etc and they said they have had loads of custemers with the same fault, sony through the product out without fully testing it to claw more money from us unsusspecting consumers. i was told the best thing to do was put it in the bin and dont waste time with repair? £300 to sony for something that doesnt work ,wht can we expect we are only comsumers, well big shout out to everyone i wont be buying sony again or any of its by products. in this day you wouldnt thing you would get ripped off by multinational companies lol ,big thumbs dwn to sony and i will put any1 off buyig their products again after this fiasco and time and money wasting, please dont buy or recommed any sony products and then they might find out how it hurts their pocket, after all they hv an endless suppy of faulty crap to sell. buy it if a freind has recommended it , not a multi million pound ad campaign .shame on you sony, pay the customers their hard earnd money back or replace it with an unfaulty product not a sony tho we knw wht happens,, and shame on me if i buy sony products again

I’ve had my RDR GX-210 for two years, and it has always failed to read/play the occasional DVD, maybe one in 30, although if you copy the disc on the computer, the GX-210 will play the copy! However, it’s been happening more often, and DVDs I’ve recorded fail to play on some other machines, so, whereas I’ve been luckier than most people, it’s time for the GX-210 to be relegated to the status of second spare.

i've had 2 and they were both the same... crap. I cleaned the lasar on one it came back to life for a few days then packed in again. absolute pants

Mine has just suffered the same fate! It does'nt matter which disc I put in it, the result is the same. Cleaning the head has made no difference. Bought the thing new & have used very little since it was purchased as I have Sky Plus. It was an expensive product.... Which adds insult to injury! I will soon replacing with HD (including my Sony TV), but if this sort of thing is the best Sony can produce then I will be replacing with another brand.

I'm in the same boat. This is the sort of thing that happens when SONY try and save a few quid. Take my advice get sky plus and and flog the cr*ppy GX-210 on E-bay for someone to use for playing audio Cd's

I hate to say it guys but you can add mine to the list of don't buy. My GX210 threw a wobbly and no longer works.
Bought a replacement from ASDA play only for £14. Ok not the best in the world but it is playing my wifes XMAS DVD so it sounds like buy throw aways from now on. I am annoyed with myself because I chose it.

yes mine is the same. its only done about 2 weeks work since i got it, been stored! worked twice then cannot read disk

i got 200 of there they are all faulty . just dont buy sony is the best thing

Its a very common problem with this machine, you need a new laser assembly, you can buy a new recorder for less than this costs ...black mark for Sony on this machine ...

I have brought 5x faulty Sony GX210 off of E-bay.
4x of them have the same fault, they can not read any type of DVDs. The other had a minor fault which I fixed.

I then swapped the 4x DVD drives out of the faulty units, and one by one fitted them in to the now good Sony GX210. None of the DVD drives worked !!
It looks like a very common problem on these units the laser either packs up or gets very weak.

As far as I can work out this is an inherent fault with this particular model. I have had two machines and both failed in the same way. The first machine lasted 3 months and it's replacement lasted over a year but has only recently suffered the same fate "Cannot Read This Disk". It doesn't matter what disk I put in the machine the error message is always the same.

I checked on-line and it turns out loads of people have the same complaint. Mine is out of warranty now so looks like I will have to buy another recorder and this time it won't be a Sony.

I have asked Sony about a replacement or even a good will gesture but they keep telling me it is the disk that is at fault - odd really because I have told them that no disks I put in will work but they just keep on saying it is a disk problem and refuse to acknowledge the problem is with the recorder itself.

I might write to the gadget show people .....

if anyone has found an easy fix for this problem, then I for one would love to know about it

Joe, January 2008
i think it will need new laser, if it plays a audio cd o.k than the laser for dvd will need replacing...i am getting quote of about £90+ to get a replacement dvd drive assembley.
