heating,home heating systems?

Heating not working but when you run hot water the upstairs radiators get warm.

Without knowing how the system is controlled it is possible to suggest there is a fault with a motorised valve which is not motoring to the heating position. If the system is piped with the return from the cylinder common to the upstairs heating return, there will be a certain amount of heat creeping into the radiators via the return pipe. Can you tell if the return pipes on the upstairs rads appear warmer than the flow pipes.

Hi, no work has been carried out on the system, there is a tank in the loft for the heating. There are two control buttons,Heating or Water, since the heating stopped working when you select the water setting the upstairs radiators get warm. The hot water side works perfectly.

Right Dave, Myson Economist being a system boiler, not a combi, would involve having a hot water calorifier supplying hot water to the domestic taps. The water to the taps should have no bearing on the water passing through the radiators. The heating water circuit and the DHW circuit are totally seperate. Has any work been carried out recently on your plumbing or heating pipework. Can you tell if there is a seperate tank feeding your heating system in your roof space.
