How can i fix my whirlpool inspirations washing machine?

My whirlpool inspirations washing machine (awm 347) will not take the fabric softener liquid. is there a way to solve this?

To remove the try there is a little level flap at the back right hand side of the soap drawer - You gently push it whilst gently pulling the tray and it slides out (I used to yank it before I found the level!)

You then take the part out of the softner compartment, back left, it should lift up and off then clean it of all the gunk - When you put it back together fill it with water and ensure it drains out by itself (via the syphon method - IE when full it then drains from the bottom of the compartment and draws all softner with it)

If you take the lide off it (two screws at the back then lifts up and off - There is a little gadget on a wire and spring - This controls where the water goes when your turn the dial from 1 (pre wash) to 4 (regular) to the end cycle where you'd expect fabric softner to go - Turn the dial and make sure it moves ok, if not that would be the thing to fix.
